gws-sheets-read — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Reads cell values and sheets from Google Spreadsheets via CLI. Useful when an agent needs spreadsheet data without risk of altering it.
npx skills add googleworkspace/cli --skill gws-sheets-read -a claude-codeWhat gws-sheets-read does
Part of the googleworkspace/cli package version 0.22.5, this skill runs gws sheets +read to fetch data from Google Spreadsheets. It requires the --spreadsheet flag with the target ID and the --range flag. For the range, pass a sheet name such as Sheet1 or specific cells like Sheet1!A1:B2 and Sheet1!A1:D10.
The gws binary must be installed. You also need ../gws-shared/SKILL.md for authentication and security rules. If it is missing, create it by running gws generate-skills. The skill is strictly read-only and never modifies your spreadsheet.
If you need advanced query options, Google recommends using the raw values.get API instead. Install this skill if you want safe spreadsheet inspection without worrying about accidental edits.
What it helps with
- read cell values from a Google Spreadsheet
- extract data from a specific sheet by name
- inspect spreadsheet rows without risk of accidental edits
Example prompts for the agent
- Read range `Sheet1!A1:D10` from spreadsheet ID
- Fetch values from `Sheet1` in spreadsheet ID
- Show cells `Sheet1!A1:B2` from spreadsheet ID using gws
