sheets-cli — Claude Code skill: Google Sheets from the terminal
This skill gives your agent a CLI for reading Google Sheets tables, appending rows and editing cells. Useful when project data lives in a cloud spreadsheet.
npx skills add gmickel/sheets-cli --skill sheets-cli -a claude-codeWhat sheets-cli does
The skill documents sheets-cli, which is already on PATH. The agent calls it directly: sheets find locates a spreadsheet by name through Google Drive, sheets list shows the tabs, read table returns headers and rows as JSON, append adds a record, and update key edits cells by matching a key column.
Key-based edits beat row numbers, because inserting or deleting rows shifts the numbering. Every row from read table carries a _row field holding its absolute sheet row, and that value goes straight into update row --row. Counting rows by hand is a mistake the skill warns against.
Before any write, run the command with --dry-run and check the preview. Finding a spreadsheet by name needs the Drive API turned on in your Google project, and sign-in goes through sheets-cli auth login --credentials <oauth-client.json>. Each command answers with JSON that includes an ok field, so you can tell whether the update landed.
What it helps with
- pull rows from a tab and hand them to the agent as JSON
- add a new record at the end of a table
- change a status in the row matched by a key column value
- apply several edits in one batch operation
- preview writes with
--dry-runbefore touching the sheet
Example prompts for the agent
- Find the spreadsheet named Projects and list its tabs
- Read the first 100 rows from the Tasks tab
- Mark the row with ID TASK-42 as Complete, dry-run it first
