gws-docs — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
This skill lets an agent read and update Google Docs through gws. Use it when document changes should happen from an agent chat.
npx skills add googleworkspace/cli --skill gws-docs -a claude-codeWhat gws-docs does
gws-docs gives the agent commands for Google Docs through the documents resource. It can fetch the latest version of a document, create a blank document with a chosen title, and apply a batch of updates. The separate +write helper appends text to a document.
Before calling an API method, inspect gws docs --help, then check its schema with gws schema docs... The schema provides the required parameters, types, and defaults used to build --params and --json flags. Auth, global flags, and security rules come from the shared gws-shared skill; when it is missing, the source instructs you to run gws generate-skills.
Install it when your agent needs to work with Google Docs and your environment already uses the gws CLI. The CLI and configured authentication are prerequisites for the workflow.
What it helps with
- fetch the latest version of a Google Doc
- create a blank document with a chosen title
- apply several document updates in one request
- append text with the
+writecommand - inspect Google Docs method parameters
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a blank Google Doc titled “Release plan”.
- Fetch the latest version with `documents.get`.
- Append this text to the document with `+write`.

## API Resources
### documents
- `batchUpdate` — Applies one or more updates to the document. Each request is validated before being applied. If any request is not valid, then the entire request will fail and nothing will be applied. Some requests have replies to give you some information about how they are applied. Other requests do not need to return information; these each return an empty reply. The order of replies matches that of the requests.
- `create` — Creates a blank document using the title given in the request. Other fields in the request, including any provided content, are ignored. Returns the created document.
- `get` — Gets the latest version of the specified document.
## Discovering Commands
Before calling any API method, inspect it:
```bash
# Browse resources and methods
gws docs --help
# Inspect a method's required params, types, and defaults
gws schema docs.<resource>.<method>
```
Use `gws schema` output to build your `--params` and `--json` flags.
