universal-game-modder — Claude Code MCP server for game binaries
A local MCP server that fingerprints a game's engine and hands your agent tools for inspecting and patching the binaries. Useful when you need to dig into a build.
claude mcp add universal-game-modder -- npx -y universal-game-modderWhat universal-game-modder does
The server speaks stdio to your agent and stays on your machine — no cloud, no telemetry. Point it at a game folder and it reads file signatures to tell Unity (Mono or IL2CPP) from Unreal, Godot, Java or a plain native build. From there the agent drives the tools on its own.
The free edition ships 29 tools, all running in-process. That covers PE headers and sections, hex reads, writes and searches, byte-pattern scanning, string and DLL class extraction, checksums, binary diffing, Godot pck parsing and disassembly by RVA. Ten more handle the session: detect_engine, load_game, game_status, mod_this_game and similar.
Node.js 18+ is required, since the code uses ES modules and better-sqlite3. The server advertises 100 tools, but 64 of them are the Unity, Unreal and Java decompilation suites that call out to external executables on the paid tier. Call one without a configured backend and you get an error about a missing executable path. That is expected, not a bug.
What it helps with
- identify which engine a game was built with
- locate a specific string or class inside a binary
- read and rewrite bytes at a given offset
- compare checksums before and after a patch
- diff two builds of the same file
Example prompts for the agent
- Detect the engine for the game in
C:\Games\MyGame - Extract strings containing Health from
GameAssembly.dll - Read 64 bytes at offset 4096 in
SomeBinary.exe

Questions about universal-game-modder
How do I install universal-game-modder in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add universal-game-modder -- npx -y universal-game-modder. The server is then registered in your MCP config and starts with the next session.
What does universal-game-modder do?
It detects a game's engine from its directory and exposes binary analysis and patching tools to your agent: PE headers, hex work, pattern scanning, strings, checksums and disassembly.
Why do some tools fail with a backend error?
The Unity, Unreal and Java decompilation suites belong to the paid tier and need external executables. Their paths are unset in the free edition, so a call returns a message about an unconfigured backend.
