Zed is a code editor with a built-in agent. Since version 1.4.0 the old Rules feature has been replaced by Skills and Instructions, and existing rules migrate to ~/.agents/skills/ on update. For project instructions Zed takes the first file it finds from this list: .rules, .cursorrules, .windsurfrules, .clinerules, .github/copilot-instructions.md, AGENT.md, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, GEMINI.md. Only one file is used; the rest are ignored.

Skills live in .agents/skills/ and ~/.agents/skills/, and you can import them from GitHub or share them with a zed://skill link. MCP servers are configured in settings.json under context_servers rather than mcpServers, so configs copied from other agents need rewriting.
