Amazon Web Services MCP — Claude Code MCP server: install and setup
Inspects AWS Cost Explorer data, spots wasteful infrastructure spend, and posts digestible summaries to Slack. Built for managed service providers and teams.
Open on GitHubWhat Amazon Web Services MCP does
This server connects an AI coding agent directly to AWS billing endpoints. It extracts cost numbers from Cost Explorer, highlights unused resources, and turns raw statements into plain summaries for Slack. Built-in caching stops repetitive queries from inflating AWS API costs.
The setup deploys two companion components: the aws-billing-cli helper and the aws-billing-mcp binary. To query billing figures, you must supply active Amazon Web Services credentials on your local machine.
Running the connector with --transport http presents clear security risks. That mode currently lacks authentication, binds to every network interface, and exposes your credentials to local browser requests. Stick strictly to standard stdio transport until an updated release ships.
What it helps with
- break down complex AWS invoices without deep cloud expertise
- detect idle resources and wasteful cloud expenditures
- cache queries to prevent repeated AWS Cost Explorer API charges
- format and dispatch readable billing summaries directly to Slack
Example prompts for the agent
- Analyze last month's AWS Cost Explorer data and point out wasteful spend
- Generate a plain-text billing summary and format it for Slack
- Check recent cloud charges and identify which services cost the most

Questions about Amazon Web Services MCP
How to install Amazon Web Services MCP in Claude Code?
Add the marketplace by running /plugin marketplace add Servosity/msp-skills and then install the plugin using /plugin install aws-billing@msp-skills. Alternatively, run bash <(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Servosity/msp-skills/main/skills/aws-billing/install.sh) in a terminal.
What does Amazon Web Services MCP do?
It queries AWS Cost Explorer, flags waste in cloud infrastructure, and compiles readable breakdown reports for Slack. Local caching prevents unnecessary spending on repetitive Cost Explorer API calls.
Why is the HTTP transport mode unsafe to run?
The --transport http flag opens an unauthenticated port listening across all interfaces, exposing credentials to external browser pages. You should strictly run the server via stdio.
