Coder — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup

Connect an AI coding client to Coder to manage workspaces, templates, and cloud development environments.

Open on GitHub

What Coder does

Coder defines cloud development environments with Terraform and provides workspaces and templates to manage. Its MCP server connects the platform to Claude Code, Codex, and the other clients listed as supported.

To connect, put your Coder server hostname in the client setup command. A production Coder deployment needs PostgreSQL version 13 or newer and an external access URL, so plan for those requirements when preparing the server.

What it helps with

  • manage Coder workspaces from an AI client
  • work with development environment templates
  • connect a cloud development environment to Claude Code
  • set up Coder integration with Codex

Example prompts for the agent

  • Show me the Coder workspaces and help me choose one.
  • Help me explore the development environment templates in Coder.
  • Connect to Coder and check which development environments are available.
