What user-story does

This skill converts feature ideas and PRD snippets into Mike Cohn user stories. It maps out who benefits, what action they take, and why it matters, avoiding vague requests or premature technical specifications. If you supply zero background details, the agent queries for the target persona and objective before generating Markdown.

Acceptance criteria follow Gherkin syntax with Given, When, and Then clauses. While preconditions can stack with multiple Givens, the workflow restricts scenarios to a single When and a single Then. Multiple triggers or outcomes signal scope creep and require story splitting. A local deterministic generator is included via python3 scripts/user-story-template.py.

Do not point this skill at database refactoring or internal engineering debt, because it strictly requires direct user-facing value.

What it helps with

  • translate PRD requirements into structured user stories
  • write testable Gherkin acceptance criteria for QA engineers
  • spot oversized stories through multiple When or Then statements
  • align product managers and developers before sprint planning

Example prompts for the agent

  • Write a user story for SMS password reset in our banking app, including lockout edge cases.
  • Convert this PRD export requirement into a user story with Gherkin acceptance criteria.
