What commit-work does

The skill enforces a structured staging workflow. Claude inspects uncommitted work using git status and raw diffs. It isolates unrelated edits into dedicated chunks. Patch staging isolates mixed files with git add -p.

Before saving, the workflow checks indexed changes with git diff --cached to catch leaked credentials and stray log lines. Conventional Commits formatting is strictly required here, which clashes with repos using freeform messages. The cycle ends by running a quick lint or test check on the newly staged code.

What it helps with

  • split tangled modifications across files into separate patch commits
  • generate structured messages following the Conventional Commits specification
  • exclude leaked API keys and debugging lines before committing
  • verify staged units with rapid local test runs

Example prompts for the agent

  • Review the current diff and split changes into smaller commits
  • Stage the bugfix hunks and craft a Conventional Commit message
  • Inspect uncommitted files and clean up accidental debug logs before committing
