What skill-installer does

This tool fetches skills directly into the agent environment. The bundled Python helpers query https://github.com/openai/skills/tree/main/skills/.curated through the GitHub API to show what is available. When given a specific target, the installer pulls files from the curated repository or an external Git source.

Direct HTTP downloads run first for public repositories. If permissions fail, the scripts drop back to a git sparse checkout using HTTPS or SSH. Accessing private repositories relies on existing Git credentials or a GITHUB_TOKEN environment variable. Everything lands in $CODEX_HOME/skills, which defaults to ~/.codex/skills.

If the target directory already exists, execution halts immediately. All actions need network connectivity, so running inside a restricted sandbox requires permissions escalation.

What it helps with

  • inspect available curated skills from the official list
  • install a chosen tool directly into $CODEX_HOME/skills
  • pull components from private GitHub repositories using an API token
  • unpack several skills in a single command using --path

Example prompts for the agent

  • List all available curated skills that I can install
  • Install the skill from owner/repo located at skills/tool
  • Download a curated skill into my environment
