What commit does

The skill guides Claude Code in writing conventional commit messages with a change type and an optional scope. Each message needs a header. Its subject must start with a capital letter, use imperative wording, omit the final period, and stay within 70 characters; each line has a 100-character limit.

The body should explain the change and its motivation. Add an issue reference in the footer: Fixes SENTRY-1234 closes the issue after merging, while Refs LINEAR-ABC-123 links it without closing it. Those reference patterns are Sentry-specific, so check another project’s conventions before applying them there. The skill also covers revert messages and breaking changes.

What it helps with

  • format a commit header with a type and scope
  • explain the change and its motivation in the body
  • attach an issue reference in the footer
  • write a revert or breaking-change message

Example prompts for the agent

  • Write a commit message for an API bug fix using Sentry conventions.
  • Format a commit for a new feature in the alerts scope and add Refs GH-1234.
  • Draft a revert message and explain why the commit is being undone.
