server-management — Claude Code skill: server ops principles
A Claude skill that gives the agent a decision framework for processes, monitoring, logs and scaling instead of a command cheat sheet.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill development/server-managementWhat server-management does
server-management is a set of principles and decision tables for running servers. Eight sections cover process management, monitoring, logging, scaling, health checks, security, troubleshooting order and anti-patterns. The agent gets reasoning, not recipes: PM2 for Node.js, systemd for anything else, Docker for containers, Kubernetes for orchestration.
The tables carry the practical weight. Which signals to watch (availability, latency, errors, resources), how to rank alerts, when vertical scaling beats adding instances. Logging gets its own rules: rotate, use structured JSON, pick levels, keep secrets out. Troubleshooting follows a fixed order — process, logs, resources, network, dependencies.
The skill declares Read, Write, Edit, Glob, Grep and Bash. So the agent can open configs, edit them and run commands. Point it at a production box and it will act on these principles, systemd units and PM2 configs included. Scope its permissions first if you don't want it touching live services.
What it helps with
- pick between PM2, systemd and Docker for a given app
- set up auto-restart when a process crashes
- rank alerts by severity before the pager goes off
- decide whether to add RAM or add instances
- walk a fixed checklist when a service stops responding
Example prompts for the agent
- My Node.js service dies overnight. Use the skill's principles to set up auto-restart.
- Help me choose a process manager for a Python app on a single server.
- The service slows down under load. Walk the troubleshooting order and tell me what to check first.

Questions about server-management
How do I install server-management in Claude Code?
Run npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill development/server-management. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/server-management/SKILL.md.
What does server-management do?
It hands the agent a framework for running servers: picking a process tool, planning monitoring and alerts, handling logs, making scaling calls, writing health checks and following a troubleshooting order.
Which tools can the skill use?
Read, Write, Edit, Glob, Grep and Bash. That means it can read and change configs and execute commands, so think about permissions if the machine hosts production.
