resume-ats-optimizer — Claude Code skill: ATS resume check
Reads your resume the way screening software does: pulls keywords from the job post, flags layout that breaks parsing, and scores the match.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill career/resume-ats-optimizerWhat resume-ats-optimizer does
The skill kicks in when you ask it to check a resume against an ATS, work out why applications get no reply, or compare your text with a job description. It extracts keywords from the posting, sorts them into hard skills, soft skills and industry terms, then checks your resume for each one: exact phrase, synonym, or nothing at all.
You get a report with a match score, calculated as matched keywords divided by total required keywords, times 100. Formatting problems are listed separately: tables, columns, contact details in the header, text baked into images, non-standard fonts. The skill also suggests where to place missing terms — summary, skills section, or experience bullets — and advises keeping critical keywords at 2–4 mentions and important ones at 1–2.
The target is 80% or higher. A score of 65% means the summary and skills list need rewriting before you send anything. Fixing layout is cheaper than another rejection, so run the check first.
What it helps with
- figure out why applications get no response
- pull the required keywords out of a job description
- score a resume against a posting
- spot layout that breaks ATS parsers
- decide where to place missing keywords
Example prompts for the agent
- check my resume for ATS compatibility and list the missing keywords
- compare my resume with this job posting and give me the match score
- why isn't my resume getting past automated screening?
