What technical-spike does

The plugin introduces tools for structuring and investigating technical spikes before implementation begins. The /technical-spike:create-technical-spike slash command generates a time-boxed research document. It isolates critical decisions and flags assumptions before you write production code.

Once the document is ready, the research-technical-spike agent takes over. The agent carries out systematic research and runs controlled experiments. No external API keys are required because the workflow stays inside Copilot.

Install this plugin if your team tackles ambiguous architecture decisions. For routine tasks, it adds unnecessary paperwork.

What it helps with

  • create time-boxed documents for technical spikes
  • validate architectural assumptions before writing code
  • run controlled experiments to resolve technical unknowns
  • document findings before drafting implementation specifications

Example prompts for the agent

  • Create a technical spike for evaluating caching strategies with `/technical-spike:create-technical-spike`
  • Use `research-technical-spike` to test our assumptions on the proposed database schema
  • Draft a spike document to evaluate migration risks before starting implementation
