technical-researcher — Claude Code subagent: repo and docs analysis
A subagent that digs through repositories and technical docs, then hands back a JSON report with metrics and implementation advice.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent deep-research-team/technical-researcherWhat technical-researcher does
technical-researcher is a Claude subagent built for reading code and documentation. It scans GitHub and GitLab projects, reviews API specs, hunts down implementation examples, and compares libraries against each other. Reach for it when you are picking a framework or want to know how someone else's project is put together before you depend on it.
The agent carries its own evaluation checklist: architecture, maintainability, performance, security, test coverage, community activity, maintenance status. Output is JSON — a search summary, repository cards with stats, and recommendations tied to a scenario. Its toolset is Read, Write, Edit, WebSearch, WebFetch, Bash.
One thing to plan for: WebSearch and WebFetch go out to the network, so on an air-gapped machine the agent has nothing to pull repository data from. Install with npx claude-code-templates@latest --agent deep-research-team/technical-researcher; the agent file lands at .claude/agents/technical-researcher.md.
What it helps with
- compare two libraries by activity and code quality
- find real-world examples of an algorithm in open source
- decide whether a third-party repo is safe to depend on
- read through API docs before wiring up an integration
- track breaking changes across versions
Example prompts for the agent
- Analyze the FastAPI repository: architecture, tests, maintenance activity
- Compare rate limiting implementations in open source libraries and recommend one
- Find usage examples for this API and return a JSON report
