rust-mcp-development — GitHub Copilot plugin: MCP servers in Rust
A GitHub Copilot plugin for building Model Context Protocol servers in Rust with the official rmcp SDK. Useful when you need your own server for AI agents.
copilot plugin install rust-mcp-development@awesome-copilotWhat rust-mcp-development does
Two pieces ship inside. The slash command /rust-mcp-development:rust-mcp-server-generator scaffolds a full Rust MCP server project: tools, prompts, resources and tests, all on the official rmcp SDK. The rust-mcp-expert subagent is there for talking through server code and tokio async details.
The generator leans on procedural macros and type-safe implementations, so you get a project structure that runs, not a sketch. Async runtime is tokio, which means the server is built for concurrent request handling.
Worth installing if you already write Rust and need an MCP server for a specific job. Without Rust in the project the generator just adds a layer you have to maintain, and the command won't teach you the language.
What it helps with
- scaffold a Rust MCP server with tools and resources
- add tests to an rmcp server project
- figure out async request handling on tokio
- wire prompts and resources into one MCP server
- get a typed server example instead of assembling one by hand
Example prompts for the agent
- generate a Rust MCP server with a file search tool
- /rust-mcp-development:rust-mcp-server-generator
- help me finish the resources and tests in my rmcp server
