What voltcast does

The server sits on top of Voltcast: day-ahead prices for European bidding zones at 15-minute native resolution, with history back to 2015. Forecasts are probabilistic — P50 on the lower plans, P10 and P90 once you are on Pro+. You also get carbon intensity and a green score from the live generation mix, wind and solar forecasts from both TSO and the Voltcast model against realized output, and a search for the cheapest contiguous window for a given load over the next 48 hours.

Two ways to run it. The hosted endpoint https://voltcast.com/api/mcp speaks Streamable HTTP, protocol 2025-06-18. The local stdio server starts with npx voltcast-mcp or in Docker and is a thin proxy onto the same REST API, so tools, auth and rate limits match. It boots and answers introspection without a key, and list_zones needs no auth at all.

Everything else wants a key, sent as Authorization: Bearer <api key>. New accounts start on Home at €9/month after a 7-day trial that requires a card; existing Free accounts stay grandfathered. cheapest_window is Pro+ only. Forecast accuracy is benchmarked in public every day, losses included, and zones where the model loses to a naive baseline are free under the guarantee. Data comes from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform and SMARD.de, attributed in every response.

What it helps with

  • price a load against exchange power rates
  • pick the cheapest window to run a job
  • compare forecast prices with realized ones
  • estimate the carbon footprint of consumption from the generation mix
  • check wind and solar forecasts against actual output

Example prompts for the agent

  • Show day-ahead prices for the DE-LU zone tomorrow
  • Find the cheapest contiguous 3-hour window in the next 48 hours
  • What is the carbon intensity in this zone right now, and its green score

Questions about voltcast

How do I install voltcast in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add --transport http voltcast https://voltcast.com/api/mcp. The server then shows up in your Claude MCP server list.

What does voltcast do?

It hands your agent day-ahead prices for European bidding zones, probabilistic price forecasts, carbon intensity and wind and solar forecasts. It also finds the cheapest contiguous window for a load over the next 48 hours.

Do I need an API key?

list_zones works without one, and so do startup and introspection. The other tools need Authorization: Bearer <api key>, and cheapest_window requires a Pro+ key.
