Sofya — Claude Code MCP server: search, fetch, research
Adds four read-only tools to your agent: web search with full page content, URL-to-markdown fetching, structured extraction, and cited research reports.
claude mcp add --transport http sofya https://sofya.co/mcpWhat Sofya does
Sofya speaks Model Context Protocol and exposes four tools. search returns extracted page content rather than snippets, with domain, freshness and news filters plus an optional AI-written answer. fetch converts up to 10 URLs to clean markdown and reads PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and EPUB along the way. extract pulls a specific structure out of a page using AI, and research splits a question into sub-queries, reads sources in parallel and writes a report with citations.
Two ways to connect. The hosted endpoint at https://sofya.co/mcp takes your key as a Bearer token; the same server is registered in the MCP registry as co.sofya/sofya. Or run the sofya-mcp package locally over stdio with npx — it wraps the Sofya REST API and mirrors the hosted tools. The local route needs Node.js 18+.
Either way you need a Sofya API key in the ay_live_... format. Calls draw on credits: 2 per URL for fetch, 10 for extract, 50 for research, and 1–2 for search plus 10 when you ask for a synthesized answer. Eligible GitHub accounts receive 2,000 free credits each month.
What it helps with
- pull full page text instead of search snippets
- turn a PDF or DOCX into readable markdown
- extract a table or field list from someone else's page
- build a sourced overview of a broad question
- check what news outlets published on a topic this week
Example prompts for the agent
- Search the web for the latest Node.js LTS release notes and show me the page content
- Fetch this PDF and summarize it

Run claude mcp add --transport http sofya https://sofya.co/mcp. Pass your key in the Authorization: Bearer ay_live_... header.
What does Sofya do?
It gives your agent four tools: search, fetch, extract and research. Every one of them is read-only and returns markdown or a finished report.
Do I need an API key?
Yes — a Sofya key in the ay_live_... format is required for both the hosted and the local setup. The local server also needs Node.js 18+.
