extend — Claude Code MCP server: parse and extract documents
Turns PDFs, scans, spreadsheets and Office files into structured data: field extraction, classification, splitting, form filling.
claude mcp add --transport http extend https://mcp.extend.ai/mcpWhat extend does
The server sits at https://mcp.extend.ai/mcp and speaks Streamable HTTP. It ships more than 80 tools for parsing, pulling fields out of documents, classifying them, splitting files, editing PDFs, plus workflows, webhooks and evaluations. Sign-in runs through OAuth: your client opens a browser window, and you pick which workspace and environment the connection is allowed to touch. From there the server guides the agent on how to chain its own tools, so no companion skill is required for that part.
Two skills come along in the plugin. extend-api is a short brief for anyone writing integration code against the Extend API and SDKs: endpoints, schema rules, sync versus async patterns, webhooks, error handling. extend-cli covers driving the extend CLI from a shell, scripts or CI against local files. Both install on their own too: npx skills add extend-hq/extend-agent-plugin.
The plugin itself is optional — any MCP client can connect straight to the same server. MIT covers the packaging only; the Extend platform and the hosted server are commercial services. While the server runs, it calls the Extend API on your behalf, limited to what you approved during sign-in.
What it helps with
- pull fields from scanned PDFs into JSON
- sort a folder of mixed documents by type
- fill a PDF form from database values
- wire a multi-step document pipeline
- call document parsing from your own code
Example prompts for the agent
- Parse
invoice.pdfand give me the number, date and total as JSON - Classify every file in
inbox/and move each one into the right subfolder - Fill
claim.pdfusing the values inclient.json

Questions about extend
How do I install extend in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add --transport http extend https://mcp.extend.ai/mcp. Your client then opens a browser window for the OAuth sign-in.
What does extend do?
It reads unstructured documents — PDFs, images, Office files, spreadsheets — and returns structured data: field extraction, classification, splitting, PDF form filling.
Do I need the plugin to use Extend?
No. Any MCP client can connect directly to https://mcp.extend.ai/mcp. The plugin adds two skills: extend-api for integration code and extend-cli for shell and CI work.
