planka — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects AI assistants to PLANKA kanban boards. Enables your agent to inspect projects, create cards with checklists, and move items across columns.
claude mcp add planka -e PLANKA_BASE_URL=<PLANKA_BASE_URL> -e PLANKA_AGENT_EMAIL=<PLANKA_AGENT_EMAIL> -e PLANKA_AGENT_PASSWORD=<PLANKA_AGENT_PASSWORD> -- npx -y @gogogadgetbytes/planka-mcpWhat planka does
This MCP server exposes 13 tools for interacting with self-hosted PLANKA boards. It allows an agent to inspect project hierarchy, retrieve card details, update task statuses, manage comments, and edit board tags. All tool inputs are checked using Zod.
The server runs via npx using @gogogadgetbytes/planka-mcp. It requires three environment variables to authenticate: PLANKA_BASE_URL, PLANKA_AGENT_EMAIL, and PLANKA_AGENT_PASSWORD.
The code expects PLANKA 2.0 endpoints. It sends the required type attribute during card creation and calls /card-labels routes, so installations running PLANKA 1.x will fail due to API differences.
What it helps with
- Build PLANKA cards populated with multi-item checklists
- Advance cards across columns as work progresses
- Post progress updates and discussion comments on task cards
- Manage board labels and attach them to cards
Example prompts for the agent
- Check project and board hierarchy using planka_get_structure
- Create a card named 'Setup linting' in list abc123 with subtasks: Config, Rules, CI run
- Move the current task card to the 'Done' list

Questions about planka
How to install planka in Claude Code?
Run `claude mcp add planka -e PLANKA_BASE_URL=<PLANKA_BASE_URL> -e PLANKA_AGENT_EMAIL=<PLANKA_AGENT_EMAIL> -e PLANKA_AGENT_PASSWORD=<PLANKA_AGENT_PASSWORD> -- npx -y @gogogadgetbytes/planka-mcp`. Replace the placeholders with your PLANKA instance URL and account credentials.
What does the planka MCP server do?
It gives AI agents 13 tools to interact directly with PLANKA kanban boards. The model can inspect boards, add cards, update checklist items, and leave comments.
Can this MCP server work with PLANKA 1.x?
No, the server targets the PLANKA 2.0 API structure. Because it relies on the mandatory type property on cards and /card-labels paths, PLANKA 1.x servers will reject its requests.
