Maya MCP — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
A local MCP server that drives an Autodesk Maya scene over commandPort, handing the agent 71 typed tools for modeling, animation, shading and viewport capture.
claude mcp add maya-mcp -- uvx maya-mcpWhat Maya MCP does
The server runs in its own process and reaches Maya on localhost instead of importing Maya modules into itself. Clients get 71 tools covering scenes, nodes, attributes, selection, connections, meshes, modeling, shading, skin, animation, curves, scripts and viewport grabs. If the server dies, the editor keeps running.
Setup is short. pip install maya-mcp pulls the package, maya-mcp starts the server. Inside Maya you run scripts/enable_commandport.py once from the Python Script Editor; on 2025 and later it keeps the echoOutput route, on 2024 it falls back to the loopback-only path. You need Python 3.10.1+ and Maya 2024 or newer.
Raw code execution is off until MAYA_MCP_ENABLE_RAW_EXECUTION=true is set, which is what unlocks script.run. scene.new and scene.open refuse while the open scene has unsaved changes unless you pass force=True, or a client with form elicitation can prompt for the discard. With commandPort closed the server will start and see nothing. Check the link with health.check, then scene.info, then nodes.list.
What it helps with
- read the open Maya scene from the chat
- block out a node graph without switching windows
- reassign shading on the current selection
- grab the viewport as an image
- bind skin weights to a mesh from a joint list
Example prompts for the agent
- Run
health.checkand thenscene.info— is the Maya link alive? - List the scene with
nodes.listand select every camera. - Give the selected objects a new shader and capture the viewport.

Questions about Maya MCP
How do I install Maya MCP in Claude Code?
With a single command: claude mcp add maya-mcp -- uvx maya-mcp. That registers the server in the Claude Code config; after that you still open commandPort inside Maya.
What does Maya MCP do?
It exposes type-checked control over an Autodesk Maya scene: nodes, selection, modeling, shading, skin, animation, curves and scripting. All traffic goes over commandPort on localhost.
Which Maya and Python versions does it need?
Autodesk Maya 2024 or newer, plus Python 3.10.1+.
