Instagram — Claude Code MCP: what it does, install
This MCP server links an Instagram account to AI clients for publishing, comment and DM handling, and account or media insights.
claude mcp add --transport http instagram-mcp https://api.mcp.ai/p_instagramWhat Instagram does
Instagram connects an account to Claude Code and other MCP clients. It uses the official API to publish photos, videos, carousels, Reels, and Stories, retrieve comments and direct messages, send replies, and read profile or media metrics.
The server exposes 27 tools for media, comments, conversations, and insights. Engagement requests run asynchronously: each returns a job_id, which can be checked with instagram_actions_get_job_status or instagram_actions_list_jobs. The Advanced plan adds likes, follows, story viewing, and starting a new DM conversation.
Connection is available through a Business or Creator account, or through a username and password with 2FA support. Engagement jobs run one at a time and take about ~40 s to ~2 min, so the queue is a constraint for account actions at higher volume.
What it helps with
- publish photos, videos, or Reels to Instagram
- check new comments on recent posts
- reply to a comment or an existing DM
- read reach and engagement metrics
- track an account action by
job_id
Example prompts for the agent
- Publish
launch.jpgto my Instagram with the caption “Today’s launch.” - Find new comments on my recent posts and reply to them.
- Show the reach and engagement for my Reels, then check the job status.
