gnucash-mcp — Claude Code MCP server: GnuCash bookkeeping
Lets an AI assistant read and write your GnuCash book: account overview, reconciliation, customer invoices. The file stays on your machine.
Open on GitHubWhat gnucash-mcp does
The server runs locally against your .gnucash file. Nothing is synced to a cloud service, and the audit log stays put. Your assistant only sees what its tool calls hand back — balances, payees, invoices — the same figures you would see on screen.
A single call returns the whole picture: net worth over time, runway, budget pacing, who owes you money, what is overdue, which accounts still need reconciling. Three sample books ship with the repo, covering a personal ledger with freelance work, a studio in Shenzhen and a German freelancer on an SKR03 chart. Try one before pointing the server at your own data. Claude Desktop users can grab the .mcpb bundle, double-click it and skip the terminal entirely.
You need GnuCash installed and an assistant that speaks MCP. Coming from version 1.4, read the upgrade guide first — the first write with 1.5 is where a skipped step shows up.
What it helps with
- pull an account and net worth summary in one request
- dictate transactions and have them written to the book
- issue a customer invoice and track receivables
- reconcile accounts and spot unreconciled entries
- check budget pacing and cash runway

There are no install commands for Claude. On Claude Desktop, download the .mcpb bundle from the latest release and double-click it. Other clients connect through the setup in docs/CLIENTS.md.
What does gnucash-mcp do?
It gives an AI assistant access to your GnuCash book: reading balances and accounts, writing transactions, reconciling, issuing invoices. The server runs on your machine and the book file never leaves it.
Can I try it without my own data?
Yes. The repo includes three sample books with full years of activity, mixed currencies, customers and budgets. The Claude Desktop bundle carries them built; from a clone one command builds them.
