What orbit does

Orbit sits on top of the agent CLI you already have signed in. The agent connects over MCP and files tasks; Orbit never holds provider API keys. Its state stays in ~/.orbit and .orbit/, and no telemetry leaves the machine.

Parallel runs are separated by sandboxes and per-file locks, so overlapping edits wait rather than collide. Delivery is gated: the agent plans, executes and reviews in a locked worktree, then opens a pull request that waits for you unless --complete was passed. Each task keeps its prompt, plan, execution trace and review verdict, and workflow commits carry the task ID. Nothing begins until you approve it.

The package installs globally from npm. You need macOS or Linux on x64 or arm64 (Windows goes through WSL2), Node 18+, a signed-in agent CLI, and authenticated gh if pull requests are part of the loop. orbit init sets the machine name, task-ID prefix and agent skills; orbit doctor inspects the environment but skips provider sign-in and MCP connectivity checks.

What it helps with

  • split a long spec into parallel tasks that wait for approval
  • run several agents on one repo without file collisions
  • keep the prompt and review attached to every change
  • take a task from plan to pull request in fixed steps
  • watch progress in a local dashboard

Example prompts for the agent

  • Set up Orbit for this repo
  • File a task: add hello.txt containing hello
  • Show what's running with orbit task show <ID>
