bugherd-mcp — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects BugHerd to your AI agent so it can read and update projects, tasks, comments and webhooks over API v2. Useful when bug reports live in BugHerd but you work in the editor.
claude mcp add bugherd-mcp -e BUGHERD_API_KEY=<BUGHERD_API_KEY> -- npx -y bugherd-mcpWhat bugherd-mcp does
The server wraps BugHerd API v2 in 37 tools, all named with a bugherd_ prefix. They reach organizations, users, projects, tasks, Kanban columns, comments, attachments and webhooks. Tasks can be filtered by status, priority or tag, and fetched by global ID or by a local number like #123.
Write access is there too. An agent can open a task, move it to another project, change its status, assignee or description, and post a comment. Columns and project members are editable as well.
It runs locally as an unofficial, MIT-licensed build. You need an API key from Settings > General Settings in BugHerd, passed as BUGHERD_API_KEY. bugherd_delete_project removes a project for good, so keep manual approval on for that call. BugHerd averages 60 requests per minute with bursts of 10, and the server handles rate-limit errors itself.
What it helps with
- list every critical bug in a BugHerd project from the chat
- file a new task straight from a bug description
- move a batch of tasks between projects
- post a comment on a task once the fix is deployed
- register a webhook for
task_createevents
Example prompts for the agent
- List the critical bugs in BugHerd project 12345
- Create a BugHerd task in project 12345 about the misaligned login button
- Comment on BugHerd task 678 in project 12345 that the fix has shipped
