Session Steward — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup
Review local Codex and Claude Code sessions, inspect their related records, and plan cleanup. Useful when you need to sort through sessions across workspaces before removing them.
claude mcp add session-steward -- npx -y session-stewardWhat Session Steward does
Session Steward reads the local ~/.codex and ~/.claude folders. Filter sessions by activity, workspace, archive status, name, or ID, then inspect a timeline of messages, file changes, and commands. It can also show recognized session storage and token use.
Before deleting, the server builds a plan of related records for you to review and confirm. It makes a local recovery backup, checks the result, and leaves storage it cannot identify untouched. Node.js 24.15 or newer is required. The MCP process runs locally, but your client may send session details—including messages and workspace paths—to its AI provider.
What it helps with
- find inactive sessions across workspaces
- sort large sessions by storage size
- inspect a session timeline before removal
- clean related session records from a reviewed plan
- restore session data from a backup
Example prompts for the agent
- Find inactive Codex and Claude Code sessions, grouped by workspace.
- Show this session's timeline and token use before cleanup.
- Prepare a cleanup plan for the selected sessions and wait for my approval.
