Rootly — Claude Code MCP server: incidents and on-call
Gives your coding agent access to Rootly: incidents, on-call schedules, analysis. Handy when you debug a failure without leaving the editor.
claude mcp add mcp-server -e ROOTLY_API_TOKEN=<ROOTLY_API_TOKEN> -- uvx rootly-mcp-serverWhat Rootly does
The Rootly MCP server exposes the Rootly API to an AI agent. Ask it about an incident, pull a team's on-call rotation, gather what you need for a postmortem. It runs in Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Cline and Zed.
The hosted endpoint is the shortest path: nothing to install locally, and the client opens a browser so you sign in to Rootly over OAuth2. An API token is only for setups where OAuth does not fit — it goes into the Authorization header. There is also a Code Mode endpoint and a trimmed tool profile, enabled by appending ?tool_profile=slim to the URL or sending the X-Rootly-Tool-Profile: slim header.
The SSE transport goes away after 2026-11-20. Any config still pointing at https://mcp.rootly.com/sse has to move to Streamable HTTP or Code Mode, or the server stops answering past that date. Self-hosting needs uvx and the ROOTLY_API_TOKEN variable.
What it helps with
- read incident details without opening the web dashboard
- export a team's on-call rotation
- build an event timeline for a postmortem
- find earlier incidents on the same service
- check who is on call right now
Example prompts for the agent
- List open incidents from the last day
- Who is on call for the payments team?
- Build a timeline for this incident and suggest likely causes

Questions about Rootly
How do I install Rootly in Claude Code?
Register the server first: claude mcp add mcp-server -e ROOTLY_API_TOKEN=<ROOTLY_API_TOKEN> -- uvx rootly-mcp-server. The client then walks you through sign-in.
What does the Rootly MCP server do?
It lets an agent query the Rootly API for incidents, on-call schedules and analytics. You ask from the chat instead of switching to a browser tab.
Do I need an API token?
Not always. The hosted server supports OAuth2, so no token is required. You need one if you run the server locally with uvx or pick token-based auth.
