pmcp — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup

A Rust toolkit for building MCP servers, including config-driven options that need no Rust code. Use it to expose SQL databases or REST APIs.

What pmcp does

pmcp brings together a Rust SDK for the Model Context Protocol and tools for building servers. SQL and OpenAPI/HTTP servers can be described in config.toml and run with a prebuilt binary; an Excel workbook can be compiled into a bundle and served. The ecosystem also includes the cargo pmcp CLI, agent tooling, and a reference book.

SQL examples cover SQLite, Postgres, MySQL, and Athena. OpenAPI/HTTP servers support six outgoing-auth models, and demo configurations for live APIs require any credentials specified by their instructions. For a project you want to extend, cargo pmcp new scaffolds a Rust crate. Deployment targets include AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Run, and Cloudflare.

This is a development toolkit, not a ready-made database connection. Choose a server package and prepare its configuration or workbook first.

What it helps with

  • create a config-driven MCP server for a SQL database
  • connect a REST backend through OpenAPI
  • expose Excel output tables as MCP tools
  • scaffold a Rust server for deployment

Example prompts for the agent

  • Build an MCP server for this SQL database from a configuration.
  • Set up a server for this REST API using its OpenAPI description.
  • Show me which tools would come from pricing.xlsx.

Questions about pmcp

How do I install the pmcp SQL server?

Run cargo install pmcp-sql-server, then start it with pmcp-sql-server --config <path>. You can also pass the SQL schema with --schema <path>.

What does pmcp do?

It provides a Rust SDK and tooling for building MCP servers. SQL and OpenAPI/HTTP servers can be configured, while Excel workbooks can be compiled into bundles for serving.

Do I need Rust to build a pmcp server?

The config-driven SQL and OpenAPI/HTTP servers do not require you to write Rust code. To extend a server as a project, scaffold a crate with cargo pmcp new.
