Oko — Claude Code MCP server: search and setup
Oko searches a project on the local machine and gives coding agents ranked code excerpts with line numbers. It helps when the codebase is unfamiliar.
Open on GitHubWhat Oko does
Oko adds local project search to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and the other listed clients. It checks keywords, symbols and file structure, then ranks the matching locations before the agent starts browsing files on its own. The result is a focused excerpt with line numbers.
Install it with Homebrew or the provided installer, then run oko setup --client claude inside a project. Setup connects the client and asks for a TypeSafe AI key on first use. Each project needs its own setup, and the server runs on macOS and Linux.
The terminal interface includes oko ask, with an optional JSON result. Adding --no-jev switches to local keyword ranking without a key. Duplicated code can still send the wrong copy to the top, while changes spread across many files need further exploration by the agent.
What it helps with
- locate the file that handles a feature
- trace how request retries work
- inspect a ranked excerpt with line numbers
- reduce unnecessary file browsing by an agent
Example prompts for the agent
- Find where authentication is handled in this project.
- Trace the retry logic and show the relevant line numbers.
- Use Oko to locate every file connected to this API.

Questions about Oko
How do I install Oko in Claude Code?
Run brew install bartlomein/tap/oko, enter the project with cd your-project, then execute oko setup --client claude. The first setup run asks for a TypeSafe AI key.
What does Oko do?
Oko searches the project locally, ranks matching locations and sends the agent selected excerpts with line numbers. Its search uses keywords, symbols and file structure.
Can Oko work without a TypeSafe AI key?
Use --no-jev for local keyword ranking without a key. If the same code exists in multiple files, Oko may rank the wrong copy first.
