mcp-documentation-server — Claude Code MCP server: local docs
A local document store with semantic search for AI coding agents. Useful when the agent should search your own notes instead of the web.
claude mcp add mcp-documentation-server -- npx -y @andrea9293/mcp-documentation-serverWhat mcp-documentation-server does
Documents stay on your disk, and the server searches them two ways at once: full-text and vector. Embeddings come from the local Xenova/all-MiniLM-L6-v2 model via Transformers.js, so no external database or cloud API is involved. Data lives in ~/.mcp-documentation-server by default.
The tool set includes add_document, search_all_documents and get_context_window, which returns neighbouring chunks so the model sees more than the matched fragment. Drop .txt, .md or .pdf files into the uploads folder and run process_uploads. A web UI starts on port 3080 with browsing, uploads and search. The same operations are exposed as a REST API on http://127.0.0.1:3080/api/, which keeps MCP tool schemas out of the conversation context.
AI-powered search through search_documents_with_ai only runs when GEMINI_API_KEY is set; without it you still get the local tools. Set START_WEB_UI=false to turn the interface off. WEB_HOST=0.0.0.0 binds it to every interface, which puts your document base on the network for anyone on the same machine or LAN.
What it helps with
- find a specific passage in your own project docs
- give an agent a local knowledge base with no cloud dependency
- index PDF and Markdown files in one searchable store
- pull surrounding chunks around a matched fragment
- expose document search over REST instead of MCP schemas
Example prompts for the agent
- Add a document describing the project architecture to the knowledge base
- Search all documents for where the config format is described
- Show the context window around that chunk

Questions about mcp-documentation-server
How do I install mcp-documentation-server in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add mcp-documentation-server -- npx -y @andrea9293/mcp-documentation-server. The web UI then starts at http://localhost:3080.
What does mcp-documentation-server do?
It stores documents locally and gives the agent tools to add, search and delete them. Search combines full-text and vector matching, with embeddings computed on your machine.
Do I need an API key for it to work?
No. Without GEMINI_API_KEY the local search tools still work. The key only enables search_documents_with_ai with Gemini analysis.
