GuestKit — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, install

GuestKit inspects a powered-off VM disk offline and rates its first-boot readiness. Use it before migration or a hypervisor cutover.

What GuestKit does

GuestKit works on one VM disk image while the guest is shut down. Its MCP server reads qcow2, VMDK, VHDX, VHD, VDI, and raw images through NBD or a loop mount, then returns a 0–100 boot-readiness score with the causes behind each blocker.

It can produce a reviewable repair plan, CI check data, and a signed Cutover Passport. The available description also covers migration plans for 8 targets and a container entry point at ghcr.io/zyvorai/guestkit-mcp:1.2.9. Docker is required for the shown Claude Code setup; without it, the GuestKit container cannot start.

What it helps with

  • check whether a VM image can boot on first launch
  • trace the blockers behind failed guest startup
  • create a repair plan for an offline disk
  • gate migration checks in CI
  • record disk evidence in a Cutover Passport

Example prompts for the agent

  • Inspect vm.qcow2 offline and explain what blocks its first boot.
  • Score server.vmdk for migration readiness and write a repair plan.
  • Prepare a CI-ready report for legacy.raw.

Questions about GuestKit

How do I install GuestKit in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add guestkit -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/zyvorai/guestkit-mcp:1.2.9.

What does GuestKit do?

It reads a powered-off VM disk offline, gives first-boot readiness a 0–100 score, and traces the causes of blockers. It also provides repair plans and migration-check data.

Does GuestKit modify the disk image?
