Crossplane — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects your coding assistant to a Crossplane control plane to inspect claims, packages, and compositions. Helps pinpoint root causes when infrastructure provisioning fails.
claude mcp add crossplane -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/ravibagri5/crossplane-mcp-server:0.1.5What Crossplane does
The server queries Kubernetes resources using Crossplane categories like managed, composite, and claim. It follows resourceRefs to reconstruct complete dependency trees similar to running trace commands. When a claim fails, crossplane_diagnose reports the exact low-level issue instead of a generic top-level error.
Safety is enforced by default. The server operates in read-only mode, completely omitting mutation tools unless started with --read-only=false. Deletion operations are impossible in either mode, preventing accidental destruction of live infrastructure. It works across Crossplane v1 and v2 layouts.
You can inspect drift between observed and desired configurations using crossplane_drift_detect. To inspect stuck deletions, crossplane_deleting_resources spots blocking finalizers. The crossplane_composition_render tool evaluates function pipelines offline before committing changes to Kubernetes.
What it helps with
- pinpoint root causes of failing claims and composite resources
- trace dependency graphs through
resourceRefs - detect infrastructure drift against observed cloud state
- test composition functions offline without touching the cluster
Example prompts for the agent
- Why is the PostgreSQLInstance app-db failing to reconcile?
- Show the full resource tree for my storage claim
- Identify which finalizer is blocking the deletion of redis-cluster

Questions about Crossplane
How do I install Crossplane in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add crossplane -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/ravibagri5/crossplane-mcp-server:0.1.5 in your terminal. Docker must be running locally.
What does the Crossplane MCP server do?
It supplies your assistant with direct visibility into Crossplane control plane objects. The model inspects health statuses, resolves dependency trees, and reads failure reasons directly from the cluster.
Can this server accidentally delete cloud resources?
No. The codebase contains no deletion routines, so destructive calls cannot occur even if write permissions are enabled.
