Yahoo Finance · danishashko — Claude Code MCP server: quotes and financials
Gives your coding agent Yahoo Finance data: quotes, price history, statements, analyst ratings and ticker news, all from a prompt.
claude mcp add yahoo-finance-mcp -- npx -y yahoo-finance-mcp-serverWhat Yahoo Finance does
The server exposes 13 tools. You get a live quote with day and 52-week range, OHLCV history for a chosen period and interval, a company profile, annual income statement, balance sheet and cash flow, a side-by-side comparison of up to 10 tickers, options chains, holders, dividend and split records, plus symbol lookup by company name. Answers arrive as markdown unless you ask for response_format: "json".
Nothing to build by hand: the npx wrapper sets up its own isolated Python environment and pulls dependencies on the first launch, a one-time step of roughly a minute. Your machine needs Python 3.10+ and Node.js 16+. Outgoing calls share one browser-impersonating HTTP session, which lowers the chance of tripping Yahoo Finance rate limits.
Clients that only accept a URL, n8n's MCP Client Tool node among them, can use --http. The same 13 tools are then served over Streamable HTTP at /mcp, bound to 127.0.0.1:8000 unless you change it. There is no authentication, so binding to a wider interface is a decision about who can reach your machine. DNS-rebinding protection stays active: names other than localhost, 127.0.0.1 and host.docker.internal must be listed with --allowed-host, or the request comes back as 421 Misdirected Request.
What it helps with
- check a ticker's current price and market cap
- pull OHLCV price history for a set period
- compare key metrics across several stocks
- read an options chain for a given expiration
- find a ticker symbol from a company name
Example prompts for the agent
- What is Apple trading at right now, with the day range?
- Compare AAPL, MSFT and GOOGL on key metrics
- Show me the SPY calls expiring next month
