CodeNib — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
CodeNib gives coding agents source-aware search and graph navigation across symbols. Use it when a repository needs traceable code exploration.
claude mcp add codenib -- uvx codenibWhat CodeNib does
CodeNib adds a local source index and a typed symbol graph to an agent workflow. explore_context returns bounded code excerpts with file and line references. dependency_subgraph follows callers, callees, definitions, and references, with traversal depth capped at 8 for that request.
The server runs locally through uvx and can connect to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop), Cline, or Zed. The CodeGraph setup needs Python 3.10+, Git, and a clean repository. CodeNib does not need its own model, API key, or GPU because the connected agent supplies the model.
What it helps with
- locate an implementation in an unfamiliar repository
- retrieve source context with file and line references
- trace a call chain across several functions
- jump from a symbol to its definitions and references
Example prompts for the agent
- Use CodeNib with
explore_contextto find where request retries are implemented and cite the files and lines. - Run
dependency_subgraphfor the public API and trace its callers and callees to depth 4. - Find every definition and reference for
RequestHandlerin this repository.

Questions about CodeNib
How do I install CodeNib in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add codenib -- uvx codenib. The MCP server can then be used from Claude Code.
What does CodeNib do?
It retrieves relevant source sections with file and line references, then lets an agent navigate symbol relationships such as callers, callees, definitions, and references.
What does CodeNib require?
The CodeGraph path needs Python 3.10+, Git, and a clean repository. CodeNib itself does not require a separate model, API key, or GPU.
