redmine-mcp-server — Claude Code MCP server: Redmine inside the chat
Wires an AI assistant into your Redmine instance so issues, projects, wikis, time entries and attachments show up as agent tools. Handy when triage should not mean tabbing into a browser.
claude mcp add --env REDMINE_URL=<REDMINE_URL> --env REDMINE_USERNAME=<REDMINE_USERNAME> --env REDMINE_PASSWORD=<REDMINE_PASSWORD> --env REDMINE_API_KEY=<REDMINE_API_KEY> --env SERVER_HOST=<SERVER_HOST> --transport stdio redmine-mcp-server -- uvx redmine-mcp-serverWhat redmine-mcp-server does
The server publishes Redmine as MCP tools: 53 of them on a plain install, 68 once the RedmineUP and DMSF plugins are in play. That second batch covers CRM records, documents and Helpdesk replies. A separate show_triage_board tool draws a drag-and-drop issue board in the chat, provided the client implements the MCP Apps extension.
Sign-in has several shapes. Pick an API key, username with password, OAuth2 tokens per user, or a browser login where each person enters their own key on a Redmine without OAuth. Set REDMINE_MCP_READ_ONLY to keep the agent off write operations. Anything users typed in Redmine arrives wrapped in boundary tags, so a ticket body cannot pose as an instruction to the model.
Python 3.10+ gets you a local run; Docker is the other route. OAuth2 leans on Doorkeeper, which means Redmine 6.1 or newer — on older servers that mode is out. A few tools carry their own floor as well: global search wants 3.3.0+, watchers 2.3.0+, project time-entry activities 3.4.0+. Below that, only the tool in question errors out; the server itself stays up.
What it helps with
- work through a Redmine ticket queue from the chat
- log hours against an issue
- pull up a wiki page or an attachment
- check a sprint board without leaving the assistant
- answer a Helpdesk message in the same window
Example prompts for the agent
- List my open Redmine issues for this week, highest priority first
- Log 2 hours on issue #4821 and note the call in the comment
- Open the project triage board and tell me what is in progress

Questions about redmine-mcp-server
How do I install redmine-mcp-server in Claude Code?
Run `claude mcp add redmine-mcp-server -e REDMINE_URL=<REDMINE_URL> -e REDMINE_PASSWORD=<REDMINE_PASSWORD> -e REDMINE_API_KEY=<REDMINE_API_KEY> -- uvx redmine-mcp-server. The other form passes each setting with its own --env, adds --transport stdio`, and puts the server name after the flags.
What does redmine-mcp-server do?
It exposes your Redmine data to an MCP client as callable tools — issues, projects, time tracking, wiki pages, files and news. The agent works through the API, no browser session involved.
Which Redmine versions are supported?
The suite has been run against 6.1 and 7.0. Per-user OAuth2 needs Doorkeeper, so 6.1 or later. Individual tools may need 3.3.0+ or 3.4.0+, and on an older server just those tools fail.
