What freeq does

The server links AI coding assistants to the freeq network. Through standard MCP tools, agents inspect channel streams, search archives, and fetch pinned messages directly.

Identity relies on AT Protocol accounts. Every entry carries a ULID identifier and a signature. The service checks whether an author signed the text directly or if a relay passed it along.

Because the package is not on npm yet, local setups require compiling freeq-mcp with npm run build. Alternatively, clients connect straight to the hosted HTTP endpoint at https://irc.freeq.at/mcp.

What it helps with

  • verify message authenticity against author cryptographic keys
  • search conversation history across freeq chat channels
  • retrieve pinned announcements and channel entries

Example prompts for the agent

  • Search for recent mentions of release notes in the #demo-github channel.
  • Fetch the pinned messages in #demo-moderation and summarize the rules.
  • Check the signature for message id 01ARZ3NDEKTSV4RRFFQ69G5FAV to verify the author.

Questions about freeq

How do I install freeq in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add --transport http freeq https://irc.freeq.at/mcp in your terminal. If you prefer running it locally, compile the freeq-mcp directory and launch dist/index.js with Node.

What does the freeq MCP server do?

It provides tools for coding agents to read channels, search discussion logs, and post messages. It also allows software agents to verify cryptographic signatures on received text.

How does freeq handle user identity?

The network maps user accounts to Bluesky identities via AT Protocol. Authors sign messages with their own keys, enabling cryptographic verification via the API.
