cmux — Claude Code skill: window and pane control
Skill for navigating multi-pane cmux layouts: create windows, workspaces, splits, focus surfaces, and move terminals and browser panels without breaking automation. Use it when an agent needs deterministic placement and routing.
npx skills add manaflow-ai/cmux --skill cmux -a claude-codeWhat cmux does
cmux organizes layout as a hierarchy: window → workspace (tab) → pane (split) → surface (terminal or browser panel). The skill provides commands to build, navigate, and reorder: cmux new-workspace, cmux new-split right, cmux move-surface, cmux reorder-surface. When spawning a new terminal, the --command flag runs a command immediately in a live shell, no separate send needed.
Output defaults to short handles (window:1, pane:2), but the skill accepts UUIDs as input and can return them with --id-format uuids. Workspace colors, app behavior, and cmux settings live in ~/.config/cmux/cmux.json; cmux reload-config reloads both that file and Ghostty config without restarting. Font, theme, cursor, and scrollback belong in Ghostty config, not cmux settings.
The skill also inspects download history on browser surfaces and can trigger flash cues to grab attention. It is part of the cmux-skills family: separate skills cover browser automation, markdown viewing, settings validation, and window captures.
What it helps with
- Route an agent into a specific pane and ensure focus
- Spawn a new terminal with a command that runs immediately
- Move a surface from one pane to another
- Reorder workspaces and splits in a window
- Get IDs of the current window, workspace, and pane
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a new workspace and start npm dev in it
- Move surface:7 to pane:2 and set focus
- List all panes in the current workspace with their surfaces

Questions about cmux
How do I install cmux in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add manaflow-ai/cmux --skill cmux -a claude-code, then find SKILL.md in ~/.claude/skills/cmux/.
What does cmux do?
The skill lets agents control cmux topology: create windows, workspaces, splits, and browser panels; move them; change focus; and run commands in new terminals directly from automation.
Do I need Ghostty?
cmux is built for Ghostty as the terminal. If Ghostty is not installed, cmux commands will not work.
