vedurstofa-mcp — Claude Code MCP server: Iceland weather data
Gives your agent Icelandic weather observations, forecasts, storm alerts and earthquake data from vedur.is. Useful when your work touches locations in Iceland.
claude mcp add vedurstofa-mcp -- npx -y vedurstofa-mcpWhat vedurstofa-mcp does
Six tools come with the server. get_weather_now returns station observations — temperature, wind, pressure, humidity, precipitation. get_weather_forecast covers multi-day outlooks per station, get_weather_text serves prose forecasts and text warnings in English or Icelandic, get_weather_warnings returns structured CAP v1 alerts, get_earthquakes lists recent quakes with region presets such as Reykjanes, Katla and Bárðarbunga, and list_weather_stations resolves place names to station IDs.
Station arguments take IDs ("1470") or names with and without diacritics ("Reykjavík", "reykjavik"). A misspelled name comes back as a suggestion rather than a hard failure. Responses arrive as a JSON envelope carrying attribution, source, fetched_at and data, plus errors, degraded or truncated when relevant. Measurements are metric: °C, m/s, hPa, mm, km. Timestamps use ISO 8601 UTC, and Iceland stays on UTC all year.
Node 18+ is required. No API key, no auth. Per-station forecasts are scraped from inline JavaScript on vedur.is pages, so a markup change breaks the scraper: the server then falls back to the national text forecast and flags the response with degraded: true. Check that flag before presenting a structured forecast as reliable. Forecast coverage stops at roughly 13 major named stations. The data is CC BY-SA 4.0; the MIT license in the repo covers the server code only.
What it helps with
- check current temperature and wind at an Icelandic station
- pull forecasts for both ends of a planned drive
- see which severe-weather alerts are active in Iceland
- list earthquakes near a volcanic system
- turn a place name into a station ID
Example prompts for the agent
- What's the weather in Reykjavík right now?
- Are there any weather warnings active for Iceland?
- Show me earthquakes near Reykjanes in the last 24 hours above magnitude 2.

Questions about vedurstofa-mcp
How do I install vedurstofa-mcp in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add vedurstofa-mcp -- npx -y vedurstofa-mcp.
What does vedurstofa-mcp do?
It exposes six tools backed by the Icelandic Met Office: current observations, per-station forecasts, text forecasts and warnings, CAP v1 alerts, earthquake listings, and a station catalog.
Do I need an API key?
No. There is no auth; the server runs through npx and speaks MCP over stdio. Node 18+ is the only prerequisite.
