Talonic — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Gives an agent tools to pull structured data out of PDFs, scans, invoices and forms. Useful when you need fields from a document, not a summary of it.
claude mcp add talonic-mcp -e TALONIC_API_KEY=<TALONIC_API_KEY> -- npx -y @talonic/mcpWhat Talonic does
Talonic is the official MCP server for the Talonic platform. An agent gets a set of tools: talonic_extract returns schema-validated JSON with a confidence score per field, talonic_to_markdown runs OCR and hands back markdown, talonic_search and talonic_filter query values that were already extracted. A separate group of tools covers Specs — pipelines run over documents in the workspace — and decision tasks for External-mode apps.
Two ways to run it: a local stdio process for desktop and IDE clients, or the hosted Streamable HTTP server at mcp.talonic.com for Claude.ai connectors. Signing up gives you an isolated workspace, so your documents and schemas stay private. A TALONIC_API_KEY is required either way.
Seven decision-task tools are marked as not yet production-verified. They sit at the platform's decide tier and need a tlnc_ key with a per-app grant, or an OAuth session carrying the apps:decide scope plus a senior_member role or higher. Everything else is verified end-to-end against production. Without that grant those seven calls simply fail.
What it helps with
- turn a scanned invoice into schema-validated JSON
- read a table out of a PDF without mangling rows
- locate documents by an extracted field value
- run an extraction pipeline across a folder of files
- get a cited answer about what is inside the workspace
Example prompts for the agent
- Extract the invoice number, date and total from
invoice.pdfusing theinvoiceschema - OCR this scan and give me clean markdown
- Find every document where the vendor field equals Acme
