thask — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Maps project dependencies into a graph so Claude Code and Cursor can inspect what breaks before editing code.
claude mcp add thask -e THASK_URL=<THASK_URL> -e THASK_TOKEN=<THASK_TOKEN> -- npx -y @thask-org/cliWhat thask does
Coding assistants often edit an isolated file without checking downstream components. Thask runs a graph of nodes for tasks, bugs, UI, and APIs. Connected via MCP, agents explore edges such as dependencies or triggers before modifying code.
The server exposes 25 MCP tools. To stop hallucinated edits from corrupting your notes, agent keys block direct writes to semantic descriptions. Modifications land in a suggestion queue for human review. Every record logs six provenance dimensions, including the agent model and trigger evidence.
Thask runs self-hosted via Docker. Without an active instance URL and a valid THASK_TOKEN, the MCP client fails to connect.
What it helps with
- trace downstream impacts before refactoring shared functions
- expose architecture dependencies and requirements to coding agents
- prevent automated hallucinated overwrites on project memory
- audit change history with six-dimension provenance tracking
Example prompts for the agent
- Query Thask to see which downstream endpoints depend on
handleCheckout - Check the dependency graph for affected flows before refactoring this service
- Submit an update to the user flow description via the Thask suggestion queue

Questions about thask
How to install thask in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add thask -e THASK_URL=<THASK_URL> -e THASK_TOKEN=<THASK_TOKEN> -- npx -y @thask-org/cli. Replace the placeholders with your Thask instance URL and token.
What does thask do?
It provides AI coding agents with a structured graph of project dependencies. Agents query it to find out what might break across the codebase before applying code changes.
How does Thask prevent agents from altering architecture data incorrectly?
API keys assigned to agents cannot perform direct semantic writes. Changes go to a suggestion queue where a human must review and accept them.
