remem — Claude Code MCP server: memory and setup
remem keeps project knowledge available across Claude Code and Codex sessions. Use it when an agent needs to recover earlier decisions or bug-fix context.
claude mcp add remem -- npx -y @remem-ai/rememWhat remem does
remem gathers session material, turns useful parts into durable notes, and makes them searchable later. Memory is scoped to a project and can include engineering decisions, fix rationale, and preferences. It uses SQLite, with SQLCipher encryption enabled for fresh installations.
In Claude Code, hooks collect session activity and bring relevant project memory into a new session; MCP tools and a CLI are also available. Codex can capture user prompts and surface brief memory candidates. Cursor is different: its installer registers MCP only, with no automatic session capture or startup memory injection. That distinction matters if you expect background memory collection.
What it helps with
- carry project decisions into a later agent session
- retrieve the reasoning behind an earlier bug fix
- restore project context in a fresh conversation
- search stored notes and session evidence
Example prompts for the agent
- Find the earlier decision about this architecture and tell me which session recorded it.
- Search project memory for the cause of this bug and summarize the fix rationale.
- Retrieve notes related to this task and bring the relevant context into our session.

Questions about remem
How do I install remem in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add remem -- npx -y @remem-ai/remem, then restart Claude Code.
What does remem do?
It stores and searches project knowledge gathered from coding-agent sessions, so later conversations can draw on earlier decisions and fixes.
Does Cursor get the same automatic memory capture as Claude Code?
No. The Cursor installer registers the MCP server but does not set up automatic session capture or startup memory injection.
