Notes — Claude Code MCP server: a notebook your AI writes in
An agent adds its own bullets to your Notes notebook, on today's page and tagged as its work. Handy when you are tired of re-explaining a project.
claude mcp add --transport http notes https://notes.jpwilliams.dev/api/v1/mcpWhat Notes does
Notes is an MCP server for the notebook at notes.jpwilliams.dev. On its own initiative the agent appends bullets to the current day, and they land in the same entity graph as your own writing, carrying the name you gave the connection. Weeks later a project page shows your notes and the agent's side by side, in date order. The next session reads them back, so the context does not have to be rebuilt.
Four tools sit behind it. list_entities is the shelf of projects, people and topics. get_entity opens one entity with its mentions and open todos. get_day returns a day as markdown, append_note adds bullets. A skill tells the agent when to reach for them. There is no vector index and no separate store: a memory is a bullet in a notebook you already read, and you can fix it by hand.
Appending is all the server does. Nothing can be edited or deleted, not your text and not the agent's. A correction is a new bullet. A #tag pointing at an entity that was never created makes the call fail outright, and since renaming and merging are missing, a typo stays on the wrong shelf for good. You set up a project's entity yourself, once. A Notes account is required, and the connection asks for read access to the whole notebook — that is what the consent screen puts in front of you.
What it helps with
- keep session context so a project needs no re-explaining
- see agent notes and your own on one project page
- pull a day as markdown with bullet ids
- check what an agent wrote and when
- cut an agent's access to the notebook instantly
Example prompts for the agent
- Add a bullet about the auth schema decision we just made
- Show me the
billingproject page and its open todos - What went into the notebook yesterday?

Questions about Notes
How do I install Notes in Claude Code?
Run /plugin marketplace add jpwilliams/notes-skill to add the marketplace, then /plugin install notes@notes-skill to install the plugin.
What does Notes do?
It hands an agent four tools over your notebook: list entities, read one entity, read a day, append bullets. The agent decides when to write and marks each bullet with the connection name.
Can I edit or delete a bullet an agent wrote?
No. The server only appends, so a fix means a new bullet. The mark showing an agent wrote it stays even after you tidy the text by hand.
