navette — Claude Code MCP server: a browser for agents

A single Rust binary that drives the WebView your OS already has. Useful when plain fetch falls short: JS pages, logins, forms, screenshots.

What navette — the browser for agents does

navette talks to the system WebView, so there is no Chromium download. The installed binary is 725 KB on macOS; Windows-x64 and linux-x64 run on the wry backends. It exposes 16 MCP tools covering navigation, reading, screenshots and page actions. Running navette mcp starts serve on its own when nothing is listening on the port.

The server binds 127.0.0.1 only, refuses non-local Host headers and compares tokens in constant time. Login state goes to the OS keychain: navette state save NAME keeps the jar inside the daemon and returns metadata only. Passwords live one step further — a human enters one with navette creds set SITE, then an agent fills the form via POST /login. There is no read-back API, and the fill is refused on any other origin, so a hostile page cannot harvest the secret.

Screenshots are viewport-sized, so set the viewport before navigating. Full-page capture is not implemented. For anything beyond a private laptop, start with --token SECRET: every route except /health then needs Authorization: Bearer, and an MCP host attaches with the NAVETTE_TOKEN environment variable.

What it helps with

  • read a page that JavaScript builds at runtime
  • log in once and reuse the session across runs
  • capture a viewport screenshot for a report
  • fill a login form without handing the password to the agent
  • skip installing Chromium just to load a few pages

Example prompts for the agent

  • Open the docs page and pull out the list of endpoints
  • Log in with the saved creds and screenshot the account page
  • Follow these links and collect the article headlines

Questions about navette — the browser for agents

How do I install navette in Claude Code?

Install the binary first: brew install slabbdev/tap/navette on macOS arm64, cargo install navette-browser from source, or docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/slabbdev/navette navette mcp in a container. Then run navette mcp — that mode serves MCP over stdio and starts serve itself if the port is free.

What does navette do?

It is an MCP server with 16 tools: an agent opens pages, reads them, takes screenshots and performs actions such as filling forms. Rendering happens in the OS WebView, so no separate browser is needed.

What is required to run it beyond a private laptop?

The --token SECRET flag on serve: after that every route except /health requires Authorization: Bearer, and an MCP host connects with the NAVETTE_TOKEN environment variable.
