MidOS — Claude Code MCP server: knowledge base and skills
Gives an agent tools over a local MidOS knowledge base: semantic search, reusable skills, verified patches. Set it up once and point any MCP client at it.
claude mcp add midos -e MIDOS_API_KEY=<MIDOS_API_KEY> -- uvx midos-mcpWhat MidOS - MCP Community Library does
Run midos-mcp serve and the server talks stdio by default, which covers Claude, Cursor and Cline. Remote setups take Streamable HTTP on 127.0.0.1:8419; SSE is there for older clients. To get a client-specific config, midos-mcp config --generate claude prints JSON you paste into the right file, or write it out with -o.
Access comes in two tiers. Dev is free: 34 of the 68 tools and 500 queries a month. Pro costs $10/mo and adds security ops, orchestration and write operations. A wrong or expired key drops you back to Dev without an error, so a suddenly thinner tool list is expected behaviour. Keys are managed with midos-mcp keys generate --name "my-app" --tier dev.
The catch is local data. The server expects a MidOS install containing knowledge/ and modules/, pointed at by MIDOS_ROOT. A pip install alone leaves auto-detection with nothing to find, so set the variable yourself. Python 3.10+ and FastMCP 2.x are required, and semantic search needs the extra midos-mcp[vector] package with LanceDB and embeddings. midos-mcp health reports the resolved root and knowledge counts.
What it helps with
- find a specific chunk of knowledge by meaning rather than keyword
- reuse a skill written for your stack instead of drafting one
- pull verified patches and corrections into the agent's context
- confirm that the server resolves the knowledge base and its dependencies
- separate free and paid access with API keys
Example prompts for the agent
- Search MidOS knowledge for how to set up CI in a Python project
- List the library skills for React and pick the one that fits
- Check server health with
midos-mcp health --json

Questions about MidOS - MCP Community Library
How do I install MidOS in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add midos -e MIDOS_API_KEY=<MIDOS_API_KEY> -- uvx midos-mcp. The alternative form is claude mcp add --env MIDOS_API_KEY=<MIDOS_API_KEY> --transport stdio midosresearch-midos-mcp-community-library -- uvx midos-mcp. Then confirm with midos-mcp health.
What does MidOS do?
It exposes the local MidOS knowledge base to an agent over MCP: knowledge chunks, reusable skills, validated improvements, patches and convergence ceilings. No more pasting reference text into the prompt.
Why can't the server find the knowledge base?
A pip install gives auto-detection nothing to walk up to. Set MIDOS_ROOT to a directory holding knowledge/ and modules/, or clone the repository and point at it.
