mcp-cinema4d — Claude Code MCP server: setup
Connects Claude Code to a running Cinema 4D session so an agent can inspect scenes, edit entities, build materials, and create rigs.
claude mcp add mcp-cinema4d -- npx -y @kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4dWhat mcp-cinema4d does
mcp-cinema4d connects an MCP client to Cinema 4D through a Node.js server and a Python bridge plugin installed inside Cinema 4D. Its typed tool layer lets an agent inspect scene hierarchy, create or edit objects, tags, materials, layers, takes, and render data. It also supports node materials and Xpresso-based rig work.
You need Cinema 4D 2026.0.0+ and Node.js 24+. Install the bridge in Cinema 4D’s plugins directory, launch Cinema 4D, then register the MCP server with npx. The bridge does not respond while Cinema 4D is stopped. Arbitrary Python is disabled by default; enabling it requires C4D_MCP_ENABLE_EXEC_PYTHON=1 on both sides.
Cinema 4D 2026.4 and later includes Maxon’s built-in MCP server. Do not register both servers in one client because their tool sets overlap.
What it helps with
- audit scene hierarchy and object parameters
- set up a camera, RenderData, and Take
- build a Redshift node material
- adjust Subdivision Surface levels across a scene
- connect gear behavior through an Xpresso graph
Example prompts for the agent
- Connect to Cinema 4D, list objects on the
herolayer, and flag any with non-uniform scale. - Create a camera,
RenderDataat 1920×1080, and aTakethat uses both. - Build an Xpresso rig for three gears so the driven gears follow the master gear’s size and counter-rotation.

Questions about mcp-cinema4d
How do I install mcp-cinema4d in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add mcp-cinema4d -- npx -y @kumoproductions/mcp-cinema4d. Before that, place the Python bridge plugin in Cinema 4D’s plugins directory and launch Cinema 4D.
What does mcp-cinema4d do?
It connects an MCP client to an active Cinema 4D session. The agent can inspect and modify scene entities, materials, layers, takes, and render data, as well as work with node materials and Xpresso rigs.
Can it run alongside Cinema 4D’s built-in MCP server?
No. Registering both in one client creates overlapping tool sets. Cinema 4D 2026.4 and later already includes Maxon’s built-in server.
