What Linux MCP daemon (mcpd) does

The server gives an agent structured tools for checking processes, memory, disks, logs, network connections and services. It communicates over HTTPS using SSE, with TLS enabled by default and a self-signed certificate created on first start.

Each tool call runs in a separate worker process under a Linux account. Rules in mcp-sudo.yaml determine which users and tools can receive elevated privileges. Calls are logged, with secrets redacted from arguments. Root is granted per tool, so broad permissions need careful configuration.

The daemon can run on a host, in Docker or in Kubernetes. To connect Claude Code, register the server’s SSE endpoint on port 9091 using the command below.

What it helps with

  • inspect CPU load and memory use
  • find disk usage on a Linux host
  • review system logs and network connections
  • check which Linux services are running
  • grant root privileges to selected tools

Example prompts for the agent

  • Check processes, memory, and disk use on my Linux server.
  • Show the server's logs and network connections.
  • Check the running services and restart the requested one if its permissions allow it.
