What aiterm-mcp does

aiterm-mcp connects an MCP client to a persistent interactive terminal. With agent_launch, an agent picks an execution harness and receives a session it can continue step by step. The same terminal can host ssh, docker exec, a REPL, or another agent’s TUI.

The server is designed for programmatic control, so a person does not need to stay at the terminal. You can drive another CLI from an orchestration loop, a CI step, or cron. Aiterm does not create its own shared-memory layer or autonomous agent negotiation; launched tools keep using the project and harness settings they would use from a direct CLI start.

You need Node.js 18 or newer plus a multiplexer: tmux on POSIX systems or psmux 3.3.8+ on native Windows. Codex CLI must also be installed and authenticated when you want Aiterm to drive Codex, otherwise that path will not work.

What it helps with

  • launch another coding CLI from an MCP client
  • keep an interactive terminal session across turns
  • run ssh or docker exec inside a controlled terminal
  • hand work to another agent without a person at the terminal

Example prompts for the agent

  • Launch Codex CLI in a persistent session and ask it to inspect the migrations.
  • Open a terminal through Aiterm, run docker exec, and report the output.
  • Start Claude Code and send it the next steps through the same session.

Questions about aiterm-mcp

How do I install aiterm-mcp in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add aiterm-mcp -- npx -y aiterm-mcp. Then restart Claude Code so it loads the MCP server.
