maproll — Claude Code MCP server: maps as URLs
Lets an assistant turn your data into a static map and hand back a permanent URL you can embed in a README or dashboard.
claude mcp add maproll -- npx -y @maproll/mcpWhat maproll does
maproll is an MCP server that renders maps from data and returns them as links. Numeric values produce a choropleth, colours fill regions flat, and text values give qualitative buckets. Regions use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes at world scope (US, DE, BR) and ISO 3166-2 inside a country (RO-B, RO-CJ).
Four tools ship with it. create_map builds a map from your data, add_layers puts markers, routes, circles and labels onto one you already have, find_places resolves a place name to coordinates and an id, and describe_options lists the themes, icons and projections the renderer accepts. You pass structured data — the server owns the URL grammar, so nothing gets assembled by hand.
Every call returns a PNG to look at plus svg_url, the permanent link that is the map itself. That same URL is the handle for the next edit, so a map can grow across several turns. Node 20 or newer is required. No API key is needed, though anonymous maps carry the maproll wordmark in the corner; a key from the editor removes it and lasts 90 days, after which published embeds start showing the wordmark again. OpenStreetMap attribution stays either way.
What it helps with
- turn a spreadsheet into a map with a shareable link
- draw a sea route through Suez with both ports marked
- highlight EU member states on a light map
- add markers to an existing map over several turns
- embed a map in a README without JavaScript
Example prompts for the agent
- Draw the sea route from Shanghai to Rotterdam and mark both ports.
- Add airport markers to that map and give me a URL I can embed.

Questions about maproll
How do I install maproll in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add maproll -- npx -y @maproll/mcp.
What does maproll do?
It builds static maps from your data and returns them as URLs: svg_url to embed, png_url for the image, editor_url to open it in the editor.
Do I need an API key?
Maps work without an account but carry the maproll wordmark. Setting MAPROLL_API_KEY removes it; keys expire after 90 days, and embeds published under one then show the wordmark again.
