What Honeybadger does

The integration exposes the Honeybadger API to MCP-compatible development tools. Assistants can inspect crash details, query service logs, and watch scheduled tasks. The hosted endpoint handles authorization via OAuth at https://mcp.honeybadger.io/mcp or the EU address https://eu-mcp.honeybadger.io/mcp. It requires no local container.

For local setups over stdio, the project provides a Go binary and a Docker image (ghcr.io/honeybadger-io/honeybadger-mcp-server:1.5.1). Running locally requires an API token starting with hbu_ or hba_ exported as HONEYBADGER_PERSONAL_AUTH_TOKEN.

The server defaults to HONEYBADGER_READ_ONLY=true, blocking destructive actions such as deleting projects. Running the HTTP transport independently also demands a 32-character string in MCP_CONFIRM_SECRET to sign deletions, without which the process refuses to boot.

What it helps with

  • inspect recent crash traces and exception details
  • track scheduled cron check-ins and failures
  • search application log events directly from editor chat
  • review incident alerts across monitored projects

Example prompts for the agent

  • Show the latest unresolved exceptions reported in Honeybadger.
  • Check whether our scheduled background cron jobs finished successfully.
  • Pull the recent error logs matching status 500 from Honeybadger.

Questions about Honeybadger

How to install Honeybadger in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp add --transport http honeybadger https://{host}.honeybadger.io/mcp, using mcp for the US cluster or eu-mcp for Europe. Browser OAuth completes the setup.

What does the Honeybadger MCP server do?

It lets coding assistants retrieve Honeybadger monitoring telemetry. You can investigate errors, inspect logs, and check cron schedules right within your terminal.

Why are delete operations rejected by default?

The HONEYBADGER_READ_ONLY setting defaults to true to guard production resources. Destructive actions stay disabled until you explicitly adjust that environment flag.
