nable — Claude Code MCP server: cost guard for AI agents
Calculates the cost of a command before the agent runs it and halts expensive launches or destructive operations until a human approves.
claude mcp add finops-mcp -- uvx finops-mcpWhat nable does
The server intercepts commands in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Copilot before execution: launching 8 p4d.24xlarge instances gets priced at roughly $128,233 per month and requires confirmation, while terraform destroy -auto-approve is blocked due to irreversibility. Commands below the $500/month threshold pass without stopping, and every decision is written to a hash-chained ledger on disk. The uvx nable scan command finds idle resources in AWS, Azure and GCP — unused RDS instances, detached EBS volumes, forgotten NAT gateways — and calculates the monthly cost for each using free cloud APIs only.
Install with one command: uvx nable guard install; hooks apply to the current project (--global flag enables them everywhere). Pricing and command interception work without a cloud account, relying on AWS list prices. The server reads local agent logs and estimates spend across Anthropic, OpenAI, Bedrock and Vertex AI models with per-session caps. No API keys needed; billing data stays on your machine.
In Claude Code and Cursor, the agent pauses and waits for approval when the threshold is crossed; in Codex CLI and Gemini CLI, the command is refused with an explanation. Restart the agent after installation so it picks up the hook.
What it helps with
- halt an expensive cloud instance launch before it runs
- block
terraform destroyor resource deletion without approval - locate unused RDS, volumes and NAT gateways in AWS and calculate their cost
- track Claude Code and Cursor spend by model and project
- review OpenAI, Anthropic and Bedrock costs without sending data to a SaaS
Example prompts for the agent
- Find idle RDS instances and unattached EBS volumes in our AWS account
- How much did we spend on Claude and GPT-4 last month, broken down by project?
- Launch 4
g5.xlargeinstances inus-east-1(the agent will see the cost estimate first)

Questions about nable
How do I install nable in Claude Code?
Run /plugin marketplace add getnable/finopsmcp, then /plugin install nable@nable — the guard turns on automatically once the plugin is installed. Alternative MCP setup: claude mcp add finops-mcp -- uvx finops-mcp.
What does nable do?
It prices agent commands before they execute and blocks expensive or irreversible operations until a human confirms. It scans AWS, Azure and GCP for idle resources and tracks Claude, GPT and other LLM costs from logs on your machine.
Does nable require a cloud account?
Not for pricing launches or stopping commands — it uses AWS list prices. Scanning existing resources (uvx nable scan) and checking budget against actual spend need AWS credentials; the server reads only free APIs and makes no changes.
